Yamaha F150 Patrols the Mighty Murray River

A single Yamaha F150 four stroke outboard has been selected by NSW Maritime to power the latest patrol boat to join the fleet operating in southern NSW. The Yamaha F150 is rated as one of the lowest emission outboards available in Australia and is also one of the most popular engines in the Yamaha four stroke line up.

NSW Maritime is the Authority responsible for marine safety, regulation of commercial and recreational boating and oversight of port operations in NSW.

The latest Yamaha powered rig is fitted to a Stabicraft 589 SC hull and is destined to be stationed at Mildura on the Murray River, patrolling the river from Mildura all the way through to Albury.

Supplied by Yamaha dealer MY Marine, the NSW Maritime vessel is a custom rig designed and fitted out expressly for the task.

'This is the seventh Stabicraft rig that has been supplied to NSW Maritime for operational use in southern NSW,' said Michael Rozakis of MY Marine.

'However this rig has a few things that are a bit different to the previous Stabicraft rigs. Notably NSW Maritime has specified a hardtop cabin whereas previously they have opted for a conventional soft canopy set up.'

With the Stabicraft 589SC hull rated to a maximum of 150hp on the transom, the tender called for a four stroke F150 Yamaha to be fitted. With a 30' transom height on the pod, an Extra Long F150 model was supplied.

When fitted up and tuned to the hull, the performance data logged by MY Marine proved the Yamaha to be an ideal selection. With a top speed of 77 km/h (48 mph), this rig is certainly a lively one.

While outright speed is an important factor when patrolling the Murray River, the NSW Maritime vessel is more likely to operate at the economical cruise speed of 4500 RPM for a speed of 61 km/h (38 mph). At cruise speed, the Yamaha powers the Stabicraft 2.35 km per litre of fuel. With the standard size 150 litre fuel tank fitted to the Stabicraft hull, the rig has a range of just over 350 km.

In addition to the F150 being a low emission and fuel efficient outboard, the Yamaha also enjoys an enviable reputation for being a durable commercial performer.

While out on patrol on the Murray River, the nature of NSW Maritime patrol work dictates a mixture of cruising with time spent pulling up alongside boats for safety inspections and licence checks. This kind of work involves hours of work with the engine operating at idle, together with frequent gear shifting.

The Yamaha F150 revels in this kind of work.

The Stabicraft is an all alloy built hull from New Zealand. The standard Stabicraft 589SC benefitted from a ‘commercial upgrade’ pack, a group of enhancements that includes HD fendering, commercial seating for the two man crew, box section walkway around the outside of the hull and extra lockable storage. The hull itself has also been beefed up with a 6mm plate bottom sheet and 4mm sides.

All up the rig weighs 1700 kg on the water. The Stabicraft hull is a favoured choice of NSW Maritime due to the low wake and stability of the hull.

Colin Edwards claims home podium for jubilant Tech 3 Yamaha.

Colin Edwards stormed to his first podium finish of the season in Le Mans today to hand a jubilant Tech 3 Yamaha squad its first premier class top three finish since 2004.

Edwards finished third in a rain-affected 28-lap race to give Tech 3 its first home podium since 2003, while the American also helped Yamaha to its first clean sweep of the rostrum since 2001.

Starting from the front row of the grid for the fourth time in five races, the American was immediately in contention for the lead as he pursued reigning world champion Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa. Relegated to fourth by eventual Valentino Rossi on lap four, Edwards then spent 15 laps closely pursuing Stoner and Pedrosa, and in the process he clocked the second fastest lap of the race.

Rain started to fall on lap 16, dampening the track at certain points, though not hard enough for a second successive flag-to-flag race to be played out in front of a large French crowd. Edwards briefly slipped back to fifth on lap 20, but he moved back into fourth when Stoner encountered technical problems and secured his ninth podium when he passed Pedrosa on lap 22. The result helped move Edwards into fifth place in the points, while Tech 3 Yamaha is now level on points with Ducati’s factory squad in the Team World Championship standings.

James Toseland’s Le Mans debut ended in disappointment after the British rider crashed out of ninth place following a tangle with Andrea Dovizioso on lap three. Toseland had made a fantastic start to jump to fifth by the end of the first lap, but in the frantic early exchanges slipped back to ninth before he crashed unhurt.

“I honestly thought that today was going to be my day with the pace I’d been able to run all weekend. I was fastest in free practice, fastest in the warm-up and second on the grid so I had high expectations. I really thought I could have got my first win out there, but I’ll still settle for third because it was a tough race. I thought I’d got a good start and then Casey and Dani came flying by and it was almost impossible to pass them. I tried everything, but they just didn’t make any mistakes and I couldn’t get close enough. I wanted to get by them because looking at my lap times I know I had more in the locker, but I couldn’t pass. They just had the jump on me coming out of the corners with acceleration and it would have taken a risky move for me to do it. I’m an experienced rider and those guys are fighting for the world title while I’m in fifth, so I wasn’t going to do anything stupid. And when Valentino came blazing by like a cowboy with his guns shooting I knew he was going to push hard and that it would be tough for me. Casey had a problem and I got by him and then I passed Dani, as he seemed to check a bit at the first corner because of the rain. I didn’t think the rain was that bad and the lap times were not that much slower. I got to say a huge thanks to my team because I’ve wanted to give them a podium, and I guess there is no better to do it than in their home race. They’ve worked so hard and I’m glad to give them that podium. Congratulations to Yamaha as well because to have a 1-2-3 is fantastic. My Michelin tyres worked great too, so hopefully next time I can be closer to the win.”

James Toseland DNF – 33 points
“I’m pretty frustrated because a little mistake ruins all the hard work myself and the team have put in. I wish I could have a second go at it now like you get in World Superbikes! I got a great start and really wanted to try and get away with the leaders but I lost a couple of places when John Hopkins came by with a hard but fair move. Andrea then made a small mistake and went slightly wide at the fourth corner and as I tried to go underneath him he came back on line and took my front wheel. It was just a racing incident but very disappointing because after that good start I felt like I could have got a good result. I’m already looking forward to coming back strongly at Mugello and having done a bit of testing there before it won’t be completely alien for me. Congratulations to Colin because he has been awesome all weekend. He has been on the pace since pre-season testing and he’s deserved that podium, as has the team for all their effort. It was great for Yamaha to dominate the podium so it proves what great work was done in the winter.

The Yamaha staff put in a tremendous amount of effort over the winter after a tough 2007 so to claim all the places on the podium is incredible. We are not 100 per cent happy because of James’ crash but we always knew this was going to be a tough part of the season but he did a good job in qualifying and his start was very impressive. He was right in the heart of the battle and riding well before the incident. I am 100 per cent confident things will get better for him and I believe today he could have finished around sixth. He is a true champion and I know he will never give up.”

Lorenzo beats Rossi in Yamaha one-two

Motegi: Spain’s Jorge Lorenzo on a Yamaha upstaged defending world champion and teammate Valentino Rossi in the Japanese Grand Prix yesterday, making the 2009 title race anybody’s guess after two rounds.
Lorenzo started from the third position and overtook the Italian champion on the ninth lap and kept up the pace, scoring his second career MotoGP win in 43 minutes 47.238 seconds.
Rossi, an eight-time world champion, duelled nose-to-tail with Honda rider and another Spaniard Dani Pedrosa over some laps before finishing second 1.304 seconds behind Lorenzo. Pedrosa followed home 2.459 seconds further back, riding a Honda on the marque’s home track a few hours after it staged a parade celebrating its 50th year in Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
Australian Ducati ace Casey Stoner, the 2007 world champion, finished fourth despite starting from the second spot with Rossi in the pole position. “It was a difficult race because I didn’t make a good start,” said Lorenzo, whose first MotoGP victory came in Portugal a year ago.
“I passed Rossi and he followed me very hard. I had to ride as fast as I could to grab the victory.”
The win put Lorenzo, who stepped up to the premier class last year after 21 wins in the 125cc and 250cc categories, at the top of the MotoGP standings with 41 points, ahead of Rossi at 40 and Stoner at 38. Rossi earned 20 points, which he said were important for the championship.
“I think this championship will become very interesting because four riders are ready to battle for the win at the end.”
The 23-year-old Lorenzo was third in qualifying and the race in the season-opening Qatar GP two weeks ago, when Stoner dominated all sessions before beating Rossi into second spot.
“It was a great race, long and difficult,” Rossi said.
“In the last part of the race, I was able to take my pace and take my line. I made a good lap time and came back. But Lorenzo was too far.”
Rossi was put on the pole after heavy rain washed out Saturday’s qualifying session because he clocked the fastest time in free practice.
In Qatar, the MotoGP race was pushed back by one day because of a rare desert rainstorm. The next round on the 17-leg MotoGP calendar is the Spanish GP at Jerez next weekend, where Lorenzo and Pedrosa appear before home crowds. Rossi beat the pack around the first corner on a drying track at the 4.8-kilometre (three-mile) Motegi Twin Ring after morning showers and led the race early, with Stoner lagging behind several riders.
After overtaking Rossi, Lorenzo widened his lead as much as 2.3 seconds. Stoner meanwhile was trapped behind Pedrosa and Italian Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso. Pedrosa overtook Rossi on the 18th lap but the Italian regained the second spot on the next lap.
Stoner passed Dovizioso to claim the fourth spot in the next-to-last of the 24 laps. Stoner said he heard a lot of chatter from the front brakes on the warm-up lap and “I wasn’t confident over the first five or six laps.”

Yamaha Factory Supercross/Motocross: The Yamaha Factory Supercross/Motocross team includes Broc Hepler, Josh Hill and Grant Langston. Both Hill and Hepler are eager to begin the new season after strong finishes in 2008, and Langston plans to mentor the young riders as a team advisor until a vision problem improves. Team L&M/San Manuel Band of Mission Indians made one of the biggest moves of the off season signing James Stewart to ride under their tent. In 2008 Stewart had a perfect outdoor season, a U.S. Open victory and a dominating Bercy Supercross performance. Fellow Floridian Kyle Chisholm moves up to the 450 Class as the team's second rider. After a solid freshman effort the Joe Gibbs' Racing/Spike Energy/ team has signed Josh Grant and New Zealander Cody Cooper to lead their 2009 charge. Look, it's a lovely bike, Spies and Sykes are young and fast and new to WSB and it should be a great championship. The first race is at Phillip Island on March 1st when the bullshit stops and the racing starts.

Anyway, back the press release: "The sleek new design and livery of the 2009 YZF-R1...blah... perfectly complements the impressive performance .... “MotoGP technology for the street.” We’ve all heard this more times than we care to remember, from the very second GP racing went back to four-stroke machines, thus relating them to the production world. No matter how tenuous the connection, GP to street became a PR mantra. Personally, my ears started bleeding about the 100th press release or intro I attended where this was the spin of the day.

After a 15-hour flight to Eastern Creek Raceway outside Sydney, Australia, the first words from Yamaha’s mouth about the 2009 yamaha R1 are: “born from MotoGP.” Not again... But they did fly us halfway around the world to see the thing, so before I brushed it under the table as hopeless PR propaganda and turned my iPod on, I gave them a couple minutes to explain. And, for once, it was actually worth a listen…

The Tokyo Motor Show isn't just for cars. Anything carrying a motor qualifies and that includes bikes. Namely, Yamaha showed off a raft of new bike concepts that left the press a-buzz. My favorite concept is the MT-OS (pictured above). The radically styled bike pushes 1670 cc's which would probably leave you outrunning almost anything on four wheels. Yamaha, build it and they will come.

Yamaha Offers to Buy Back New R6

yamaha has offered to buy back its latest crop of R6s which were marketed with an inaccurate tach redline of 17,500 rpm.

Well, it turns out that a streetbike engine revving to 17.5K is still nothing more than a dream. Independent dyno testing has revealed the R6's rev limiter kicks in shortly after hitting 16,000 rpm.

In response,yamaha has announced its error in that its tachometer reads about 9% too high, showing 17,500 on the tach but not in actuality.

The following is a release on yamaha's website:

"yamaha introduced and marketed the new 2006 YZF-R6 motorcycle with a red line limit of 17,500 rpm, as indicated on the tachometer. After testing production units, we have determined that the actual red line limit is approximately 16,000 rpm, resulting in a tachometer error of roughly 9%. This has no affect whatsoever on the performance of the motorcycle."

While the R6's performance remains, there may be some buyers who bought an R6 in part because of its racy redline. For those people, yamaha has sent out letters to all R6 purchasers offering to buy back their bikes (plus interest) if they are dissatisfied.

"We decided we'd better do the right thing and step up and put our money where our mouth is," explained yamaha Motor Corp's press relations manager Brad Banister.

The R6 buy-back follows a similar precedent set in the car world when Mazda offered to buy 2004 RX-8s from owners once the claimed 247 hp of the manual transmission version was found to actually measure at 238 ponies. Automatics were downgraded 10 hp to 197. The difference here is that Mazda was forced to make this offer, while yamaha is doing it voluntarily.

"It's an unprecedented thing in the industry," Banister added, "and it shows how committed yamaha is to customer satisfaction."

In fact, this over-clocking of factory tachometers has been going on for some time. yamaha's previous R6 was claimed to rev until 15,500 rpm, but our dyno testing proved that it hits its redline prior to 15K.

And this isn't uncommon in the world of sportbikes. Last year's kawasaki ZX-6RR claimed a 16,500-rpm redline but revved to less than 16K when we put it on the dyno.

yamaha hasn't publicly announced the reason behind the tachometer discrepancy, with Banister explaining that the cause is yet to be determined. He added that yamaha doesn't expect to be flooded with R6 buyers trading in their new bikes.

I believe they were largely sold with 327's, with some cars getting 427's. I believe 350's made it into some of the series II cars and they had gone over to Ford 351's (and maybe a handful of 428's) for the last cars. They were offered with a choice of 4 speed automatic, 4 speed manual, and 5 speed manual transmissions, varying on the engine it was going to be bolted to (not sure).

With even the big block cars weighing in at ~3000lbs, these things, in any form, were very formidable machines, to say the least.
